About the project

TẦM CHÂN

Tầm Chân is formed from two Sino-Vietnamese words:
[tầm: to seek]
[chân: the authentic]

The project is a collaboration between technology startup Phygital Labs and the UNESCO Center of Information (UNET). Tầm Chân uses the “phygital” technologies developed by Phygital Labs to preserve, exhibit, promote, and bring Vietnam’s traditional culture into contemporary life.

COLLECTION

What you are looking at is the Nghê Văn Miếu, cast in brass after the original Nghê perched atop the four-pillar gate of the Temple of Literature – Imperial Academy in Thăng Long. Thanks to the “phygital” technology developed by Phygital Labs, each Nghê Văn Miếu is a distinct edition tied to the name of its owner.

WHY THE

NGHÊ?

The Tầm Chân project began with research aimed at bringing the image of the Nghê – a Vietnamese mythical creature – into contemporary life.

We chose the Vietnamese Nghê for its symbolic power. The fate of the Vietnamese Nghê reflects the ongoing effort to preserve and protect Vietnam’s traditional culture in the age of globalization.

Nghê Văn Miếu

The Temple of Literature – Imperial Academy was Vietnam’s first university, a symbol of the entire community’s aspiration for talent and learning.

For many centuries, that space has been watched over by the Nghê – a purely Vietnamese mythical creature.
